A tiny country endowed with a majestic river, argued to be the most navigable waterway in Africa; the land along the banks of the river Gambia have long attracted European explorers who would eventually carve out a country with dominance over the river being the only goal – present day Republic of The Gambia.
Since the area was declared a British territory, wars would be fought between competing European powers and between Europeans and natives. Colonialism would be defeated, but independence brought its own challenges.
From armed insurrections to tyranny, the people would be caught in an unending cycle of poverty, abuse, and violence. It would take relentless determination and perseverance for the people to unshackle themselves from that nightmare, but with victory comes mourning and grief for those lost in that protracted struggle.
